Mistakes Are Where Learning Begins

Imagine a child who never makes mistakes.

It sounds impressive.

Until you realise it probably means they are never attempting anything difficult.

Learning and mistakes have always belonged together.

You simply cannot have one without the other.

Mistakes tell us where to grow

When children get something wrong, it is easy to see failure.

But psychologists see something different.

A mistake is information.

It tells us what has been understood.

It also tells us what needs to come next.

Without mistakes, teaching becomes guesswork.

Why children begin hiding mistakes

Some children rub out every wrong answer before anyone sees it.

Others stop volunteering ideas altogether.

Not because they don't care.

Because they care too much.

They begin believing mistakes are evidence that they aren't clever.

Instead of seeing mistakes as part of learning, they see them as part of themselves.

The safest classrooms produce the bravest learners

Children take risks when they feel safe.

They ask questions.

Offer ideas.

Attempt difficult problems.

Admit uncertainty.

Not because they enjoy getting things wrong.

Because they know mistakes won't be used against them.

Respond to the mistake, not the child

There is a big difference between saying:

"That's wrong."

and saying:

"That's interesting. Let's work out what happened."

One ends the conversation.

The other begins it.

What this looks like in tutoring

Some of our favourite tutoring moments begin with an incorrect answer.

Not because we enjoy mistakes.

Because mistakes reveal thinking.

Once we understand how a child arrived at an answer, we know exactly how to help them move forward.

The mistake becomes a doorway rather than a dead end.

Rediscover the joy of learning

Children do not become confident by avoiding mistakes.

They become confident by discovering that mistakes are survivable.

That they can recover.

Reflect.

Try again.

Learn.

Perhaps the goal is not to raise children who are always right.

Perhaps it is to raise children who are never afraid to be wrong.

At Julia Silver Tutoring, mistakes are never the end of the conversation. They are often where the best learning begins.
